Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Certificate or Diploma?

We recommend Diplomas as they are now the requirement for obtaining health fund provider numbers, these include Medibank Private and Workcover. Provider numbers are vital to sustaining a successful practice and gaining employment. In the future Diplomas will be the entry requirement for most massage and natural therapy associations, and Certificate IV will be phased out.

Your courses are more specific and in depth than others?

We prefer to encourage depth in subject matter so there is a complete understanding of ideas, concepts and skills. We recommend students to specialise in their chosen subjects so as to obtain a high degree of proficiency. This leads to confidence and clarity in the professional setting.

I would like to be a Remedial Therapist, what course do I choose?

That depends on the focus of your clinic, for example, if it is toward treating athletes or sports injuries then the sports specialisation is the course to choose. Most practitioners, however, will run a general clinic, dealing with long standing musculoskeletal disorders. The Myofascial or Acupressure specialisation courses may offer a better pathway in these areas. There are some who wish to treat disorders using more energetic based therapies. For example, Polarity Therapy.

Myofascial Release is the fastest growing remedial technique, why?

It is a mind-body therapy ideally suited to treating a wide variety of complaints, from musculo-skeletal disorders to functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and headaches, etc. It is a strong yet gentle therapy suitable for children and elderly, and has broad appeal. People in chronic pain do not want aggressive therapy. They are attracted to this type of body work where healing is promoted, not forced, but where deep effective therapy can take place.

Do I need a provider number so clients can claim?

Yes! Most clients now want to claim for their tactile therapy treatment. The Academy trains students to provider number standards which is now the Diploma of Remedial Massage HLT50307 a nationally recognised award.

Are evening or weekend courses Austudy or SACE approved?

Yes, full-time means an average of 25 hours a week at the Academy. This can include weekends or evenings. It does not mean attending every day at the Academy. In between subjects there is supervised clinic or assignments to do which are also counted towards full-time study.

Why a double Diploma for Aromatherapy or Reflexology?

Most health funds will only accept a Government accredited diploma in Remedial Massage for provider number so achieving a dual qualification will enable you to obtain the provider numbers which are required for a successful practice.

Do you have supervised student clinics?

Yes, clinics have been arranged so students may gain clinical experience. We have extensive training in our supervised clinics where students gain valuable feedback. Our student clinics are separate from individual subjects and are not part of subject class times so you are not paying for student clinic in class time.

Can I combine fitness training with massage?

Yes, fitness trainers can combine massage with fitness training for their clients but in reality it does not workout this way. Fitness clients prefer to go to someone other than their trainer for massage as they perceive those that have just been trained in massage as having superior tactile skills and touch than the trainer. Clients seek the quality of touch that only an experienced tactile therapist can offer and to someone who has been trained to a high standard and whose focus is in Massage.

If a trainer is good at what he/she does then they will have little time to develop a massage clientele as all their focus will be on developing and maintaining a fitness enterprise. For example, can one be a Chef cooking for a restaurant and trying to be an experienced waiter at the same time?

It is interesting to note that Chiropractors or Osteopaths take five years to complete their Degree and Physiotherapists take three years. If one wishes to work with these specialists then we would recommend the Advanced Diploma of Musculoskeletal Therapies to obtain the required skills which takes two years of study.

What if I want to work with elite athletes and sporting players?

We recommend the advanced diplomas which will give you the superior skills to work at this level and to gain entry to the Bachelor of Complementary Medicine degree at Charles Sturt University if you wish.

How many points can I use for SACE if I complete Certificate IV?

If you complete VET units (Vocational Education and Training) towards your SACE studies you can be granted status for up to 8 free choice units in the SACE. This means completing the Certificate IV in Massage at the Academy. This Certificate can be customised for you so you may even obtain 8 units before completing the whole Certificate IV. Work education can be provided as well for stages I and 2 of SACE. Please call our office for details and ask for the careers counselor who can give you more details.
